How many of you have built your whole identity around being being the one who gets things done, or is the the one who is always steady when things get rough. Are you the one who sees catastrophe coming and manages to avert it before anyone even knew there was danger? You may see being this guy or gal as necissary and as just part of who you are which makes the wear and tear it puts on you hard to see. One day though, you wake up and find that you are exhausted in ways that sleep can’t seem to fix. This feeling may send you on a journey of self-discovery brought on by the desire to “find” yourself.

There’s an old Sumerian story about the goddess Inanna going down into the underworld. She has to pass through seven gates, and at each one, the gatekeeper asks her to hand something over. One at a time, she gives up Her Crown and Garments, and coverings, so that by the time she reaches the bottom, she’s carrying and is covered in nothing. She had surrendered everything that outwardly refelcted who and what She was. The story illustrates that in order to truly understad herself and her place in the world, Inanna had to face her vulnerabilites and ultimately her own shadow.

In your struggle to get reaacquainted with yourself, you are going through your own symbolic descent. Your desire to be the one to hold everyone and everything together may be your crown, and the internal keeper of that symbolic first gate is asking you to lay over-responsibility down at their feet. You cannot move on to the next layer while still clinging to the old habit which clearly no longer serves you.

Somewhere in your past, it may have started as a survival reflex or maybe the dopamine hit from all that praise became addictive to a young, developing mind. Whatever the reason, needing to be the capable one stuck. This may seem harmless on the surface, but being present for others is not suatainable if you don’t also make room to be present for yourself. Without that, you get depleted and stress becomes overwhelming. You lose yourself in the unending tide of over-responsibility.

Let me tell you somnething, Ma cher. Real responsibility has edges. You know where those edges are because you consciously agreed to them. You can point to precisesly where it begins and, importantly for our case here, where it ends. Over-responibility has no edges. It expands to fill whatever room you walk into and then later hands you a bill that your mind and body struggle to pay.

Here’s a quote from one of my coaching clients. I want you to take it to heart: I can be responsible without being responsible for everything.

Try this for a week:

• Pick one situation where you hold your help until somebody actually asks for it.

If you journal, two questions are worth sitting with, in this order. What do you still feel responsible for even though it would honestly be fine without you? What are you afraid will happen if you just let it go?

Remember. You can’t pass through the first gate toward self-discovery with the old habits attached to that crown. Lay it down, Ma Cher. The world will still turn, and you’ll be much better for it.

Take one last sip of your tea, ma cher. Take a deep, final breath, and let your mind settle into the quiet space we have built together over these four chapters.

We have watched our Fool grow from a naive wanderer into a legendary hero. He has survived the tutorial levels, endured the grueling mid-game grind, and conquered the psychological terrors of the deep dungeons. He has beaten the game.

Now, he stands at the heavy stone double doors of the final chamber. The air is still. The quest log is complete.

Let’s watch him cross the threshold.

Level 21: The Treasure Chest - The Discovery of Enlightenment

The doors slowly creak open, revealing a pristine, circular room carved out of the bedrock of the universe. In the center, sitting on a solitary stone pedestal, is the the very thing he left the tavern to find so many levels ago - the legendary treasure chest. Our adventurer approaches, his heart beating steadily. He expects an artifact of immense power. Is it a weapon that can vanquish any foe? Perhaps its piles of enough gold t0 buy kingdoms. He lifts the heavy, iron-bound lid.

But there is no gold inside. There are no gems. No Weapons.

Instead, there is only a mirror, reflecting his own face back at him. However, it is not the face of the boy who started this journey. It is a face weathered by storms, softened by grace, and illuminated by a quiet, unshakable inner peace. The treasure is, and always was, Enlightenment - The realization that he carried the treasure and the magic all along. The power, the boundaries, the love, and the strength he sought across the continent were already mapped inside his own soul the entire time. He didn’t find a treasure; he simply remembered the treasure was him.

Level 22: The World Portal - The Cosmic New Game Plus

Directly behind the pedestal, a massive, circular portal hums with vibrant, swirling violet and golden light. A wreath of fresh green laurel leaves frames the gateway. This is The World card. It is the literal edge of the campaign map. It is the completion of the grand cycle.

The Dungeon Master steps out from behind the screen, smiles gently, and explains the final, heartbreaking rule of this cosmic game: “..to step through this portal and claim your rebirth, you must leave your current character sheet behind.” If he walks through, he will click “New Game Plus.” He will forget the dungeons. He will forget the monsters he tamed and the ones he shattered. He will forget every hard-won piece of lore, every spell he memorized, every ancestral blessing, and every scar earned along the way. He will become a Level 1 Fool all over again.

Our adventurer pauses at the threshold. A younger, less mature version of him might have despaired, thinking: “What was the point of all that bleeding, crying, and learning if I must lose it all? Why walk the path just to end up empty-handed back at the tavern?” But our hero is wise now. He looks back at the long, winding trail stretching out behind him. He remembers the campfire chats, the shared tea with strangers, the terror of the Tower, and the pure joy of the Sun breaking through the fog. He smiles, realizing a profound truth: the destination was never the point.

The treasure was just the beautiful, holy excuse he needed to start walking. The growth happened in the wandering. The love happened in the struggles. The journey was the point. With a heart completely at peace, knowing that the adventure itself is what makes existence holy, he drops his rucksack, lets go of his memories, and steps forward into the bright, swirling light of the portal…and then….

Somewhere, in a distant tavern, a door swings open. A naive young kid with a canvas rucksack over their shoulder steps out into the fog, ready to roll for initiative.

Last time we sat together, we watched our adventurer survive the grueling mid-game grind. He was stripped of his old armor by Death, balanced by Temperance, and left standing at the entrance of the final, deepest dungeon. He is high-level now and has the scars to prove it.

But as any veteran roleplayer knows, the final levels of a campaign aren’t meant to test your mechanics; they are meant to test your soul. The Dungeon Master is about to throw the ultimate end-game bosses at him. Monsters hiding in the dark would almost be preferable, but that sadistic DM thrown even worse bosses at him: the psychological demons hiding inside his own mind.

Let’s watch how he navigates the deepest abyss of his psyche as he near the end of the campaign.

Level 15: The Devil - The Illusion of the Chain

The Fool descends a crumbling stone staircase into a cavern filled with heavy smoke. In the center sits a towering, winged beast resting on a throne of stone. This is The Devil. Around the beast’s throne stand two figures, bound by heavy iron chains around their necks.

The Fool feels an immediate debuff: Fear. He looks down and realizes he, too, is suddenly wearing a chain. The Devil smiles, offering him easy shortcuts, endless gold, and absolute control if he just surrenders his quest. However, as the Fool steps closer, he notices a critical design flaw: the loops of the chains are incredibly wide. So much so, they are loose enough to easily slip right over his head. The bondage is a complete illusion. The only thing keeping him trapped is his own belief that he is helpless. With a deep breath, the Fool lifts the chain off his neck and walks away, shattering the illusion of his own helplessness.

Level 16: The Tower - The Sudden Campaign Reset

The moment the Fool walks away from the Devil’s chains, the ground violently shakes. The stone cavern begins to fracture and Lightning bolts rip through the ceiling, striking from above. This is The Tower.

The Dungeon Master rolls a catastrophic event that completely alters the map. The old world, the structures The Fool relied on, and the fortress he thought would protect him are utterly obliterated in a single turn. Rocks fall. The entire layout collapses. He is thrown into the dirt, choking on the dust of his shattered expectations. It feels like a total failure. As the dust settles though, he looks up. For the first time in the entire campaign, the dark, suffocating ceiling of the Dungeon of Expectations is gone. The sky is completely wide open. The old structure had to shatter so he could finally see the light.

Level 17: The Star - The Healing Oasis

Lying in the smoking ruins, bruised and breathless, the Fool looks up into the newly cleared night sky. Shining directly above him is a magnificent, blindingly beautiful celestial beacon. This is The Star.

Beneath its light, a gentle maiden pours water onto both the parched earth and a crystal-clear pool. The Dungeon Master grants the party a Divine Intervention - Greater Restoration. The Fool crawls to the water’s edge. This level is about pure, unquenchable hope. The Star pours light into his wounds, washing away the trauma of the Tower’s collapse. He learns that even when everything you built falls apart, the universe always provides a safe haven to heal, renew your spirit, and remember why you started walking in the first place.

Level 18: The Moon - The Illusion Encounter

Strengthened by the starlight, the Fool continues down a narrow path under the pale, shifting light of The Moon. Two dogs howl at the sky, and a wild crayfish crawls out of the dark water.

Suddenly, the map becomes distorted and the fog rolls back in, thicker than before. This level is a psychological gauntlet. The Moon casts long, deceptive shadows, turning simple trees into terrifying monsters and triggering the Fool’s deepest anxieties. He cannot trust his eyes here; his senses are being manipulated by illusions and old traumas. To beat this level, he has to look past the terrifying projections, trust his internal compass (the intuition he learned from the High Priestess), and walk steady through the dark, knowing that shadows cannot actually hurt him.

Level 19: The Sun - The Blinding Clarity

Eventually, he steps out of the foggy labyrinth, and the night instantly vanishes. A burst of brilliant, golden warmth floods the map. This is The Sun.

As joyful child rides a white horse beneath a field of vibrant sunflowers, The Fool experiences absolute, unadulterated Clarity. The illusions of the Moon melt away like morning dew. Everything is illuminated. He sees the entire map clearly for what it truly is. He feels an influx of pure vitality, joy, and truth. He realizes that every single trial he faced - the darkness, the towers, and the monsters - was just a setup for this beautiful, radiant dawn. He feels fully awake for the first time ever.

Level 20: Judgement - The Final Audit

The sky turns a deep, royal purple as a massive horn echoes across the entire realm. Archangel Gabriel appears in the clouds. This is The Judgment.

The graves of the old world open up, and everyone rises. This is the final boss gate, but the weapon you need isn’t a sword; it’s Absolution. The Dungeon Master plays a montage of the entire campaign. The Fool looks back at his Level 1 self, the mistakes he made, the natural ones he rolled, and the times he wanted to quit. He doesn’t look at his past with shame, though. He sheds his lower-level self as he integrates every scar as a badge of honor. He hears the call to ascend to a completely new state of consciousness, and stepping into his true, fully realized power, he is finally ready for the final chamber.

Take a sip of your tea, my friend. Let the warmth rest in your chest.

Look at our adventurer now. He has faced his demons, survived the collapse of his world, walked through the psychological shadows of the night, and emerged into the blinding truth of the sun. He has forgiven his past and accepted his calling.

He stands directly outside the final door of the campaign. The final prize is just beyond the threshold.

However, anyone who has ever sat at a gaming table knows what happens next. The Dungeon Master smiles behind their screen. The music changes. The easy paths vanish, and the true map opens up. Our adventurer is about to enter the mid-game grind - the deep, shadowy woods where characters are truly forged. Let’s see how he handles the shifting tides.

Level 8: Strength - The Soft Encounter

The Chariot screeches to a halt as a massive, roaring lion blocks the path. The Fool’s first instinct is to roll for initiative and draw a weapon. He expects a brutal combat encounter. However, as he steps forward, he realizes this level cannot be beaten with brute force or high attack stats. Here stand Strength. She doesn’t wear armor; she wears flowers. She doesn’t strike the beast; she gently closes its jaws with a calm, steady hand. From her, The Fool learns a completely new mechanic: Fortitude. Strength teaches him that true power isn’t about how hard you can hit; it’s about mastering your own internal wildness, holding your ground with grace, and taming your fears through love instead of violence.

Level 9: The Hermit - The Long Rest

Exhausted by the intense emotional work of taming the beast, the Fool needs to recover his spell slots and a few hit points. The path winds up a steep, lonely mountain, far away from the party and the bustling towns. Here, he takes a mandated “Long Rest” with The Hermit.

The Hermit stands at the peak of the mountain, holding nothing but a single lantern containing a six-pointed star. There are no side quests nor mundane distractions here. In the quiet dark, the Fool is forced to look inward. The Hermit teaches him that the greatest lore drops don’t come from ancient libraries, but from the quiet chambers of your own soul. The Fool learns to find light in his own solitude, realizing he is his own best counsel.

Level 10: The Wheel of Fortune - The d20 Roll

When our adventurer steps down from the mountain, refreshed and clear-headed, the sky suddenly changes color. The ground shifts. He feels as if Fate itself whispers his name. This is The Wheel of Fortune - the moment the Dungeon Master picks up a giant twenty-sided die (d20) and rolls for a random world event.

In some versions of the adventure, the weather turns to a storm. In others, a sudden stroke of luck fills his coin pouch, only for a sudden trial to empty it. The Fool realizes a profound cosmic rule: he cannot control the dice. In this game of life, there are cycles of highs and lows. The lesson he must learn here is detachment. So he learns. He learns to ride the top of the wheel with humility and survive the bottom of the wheel with hope, knowing that neither state is permanent.

Level 11: Justice - The Character Sheet Audit

The chaos of the spinning wheel stops abruptly as the Fool enters a pristine, marble courtroom. Sitting on the bench is Justice, holding a balanced scale in one hand and a sharp sword in the other. This is the chamber of accountability and karma.

This level is a strict character sheet audit. Justice looks back at every choice the Fool made in the tutorial levels. Did he cheat an NPC? Did he help a stranger? Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. The Fool learns that his choices have weight. He cannot move forward into the high-level dungeons until he settles his debts and aligns his actions with absolute truth.

Level 12: The Hanged Man - The Status Condition

Sobered by the weight of justice, the Fool walks into a strange, misty grove. Suddenly, he triggers a snare trap. Thwack. He is yanked into the air, hanging upside down by one ankle from a sacred tree. He is The Hanged Man.

He is stuck in a permanent status condition: Paralyzed. He cannot move forward, and he cannot fight his way out. At first, he panics, trying to slash the rope. But as the hours pass, the blood rushes to his head, and as he looks at the world upside down, something miraculous happens. From this inverted perspective, everything looks completely different. He sees solutions he never could have seen while standing on his feet. He learns the ultimate high-level magic: Surrender. Sometimes, doing absolutely nothing and letting go of control is the only way to progress the plot.

Level 13: Death - The Armor Discard

The rope finally snaps, and the Fool drops to the ground, only to find himself standing in a graveyard at twilight. Approaching him on a pale horse is a skeleton in dark armor. This is Death.

The Fool tenses, preparing for a total party kill - the dreaded TPK. But Death doesn’t swing a scythe at his throat; instead, Death reaches down and gently unbuckles the heavy, rusted armor the Fool has been wearing since Level 1. “You cannot carry this weight into the next act,” Death whispers. This level is about clearing out the old inventory. The Fool must let his old identity, his old habits, and his old ego die so that his true essence can survive. He sets these things down and watches the remnants of his old self turn to dust, leaving behind a clean slate.

Level 14: Temperance - The Alchemy Class

Out of the ashes of the graveyard steps a radiant angel with one foot on the earth and one foot in the water. This is Temperance.

The Fool is raw, exposed, and vulnerable after his encounter with Death. Temperance hands him two cups and, defying gravity, begins to pour liquid back and forth between them. This is an alchemy class. The Fool learns how to blend opposing elements within himself - the fire of his ambition with the water of his emotions, his light side with his shadow side. He learns moderation, patience, and how to create a perfectly balanced elixir of life. He is no longer volatile. He is centered, integrated, and steady.

Take another sip of your tea, my friend. Feel the warmth of it grounding you.

Look at our adventurer now. He is no longer the naive boy who left the tavern with an empty rucksack. He has been isolated, judged, flipped upside down, stripped of his old identity, and entirely remade. He is balanced. He is resilient.

And it is a good thing he is, because the mid-game grind is officially over. Ahead of him lie the deep, terrifying, high-level dungeons. The final bosses are waiting in the dark.

Today, we are going to tell oft repeated story of The Fool. However, Papa Eli is gonna ask you to look at it from a slightly different perspective: one with polyhedral dice, character sheets, and a map drawn on worn parchment.
Let’s talk about what the fool is from the perspective of a D&D nerd such as myself. That young, naive person full of spit and vinegar is a Level 1 adventurer. Imagine the cliff he is stading on is on the outer edge a bustling tavern. He has his iconic simple canvas rucksack over his shoulder, looking out at a horizon filled with fog. He has no armor, no legendary sword, and honestly, very few hit points. He is embarking on what us old timers call an epic quest. Rumors spoke of a mysterious, priceless treasure hidden in the deepest dungeon at the edge of the world. Who doesn’t love treasure, right? So it is with a naive smile and a coin flip, he steps onto the trail.
Every great RPG campaign has a tutorial level, and the Fool is about to meet his first guides.

Level 1: The Magician - Unlocking the Inventory
The moment our Fool steps into the clearing, the fog parts to reveal a high-level wizard standing before a wooden table. This is The Magician. On the table sit four sacred items: a cup, a sword, a coin, and a staff.
The Fool looks at his own empty hands, feeling ill-prepared. But the Wizard smiles gently and points to the items, then back at the Fool's rucksack. "You are not empty-handed," the Magician whispers.

"You have all the elements in your inventory already. The intellect to strike like a sword, the emotion to fill a cup, the physical body of the coin, and the passion of the staff. Now, learn to channel them."

This is the moment the Fool learns he has agency. He learns that he has all tools needed to complet his journey. He just has to learn to use them.

Level 2: The High Priestess - The Secret Lore
Leaving the Magician, the path winds into a deep, silent forest where a massive stone temple stands. Here sits The High Priestess, the ultimate Lore Keeper of the realm. The Fool approaches, expecting a map or a quest log with clear instructions. Instead, she places a finger to her lips.
She guides him to sit in absolute silence between two pillars of light and shadow. She teaches him a difficult game mechanic: Intuition. She hands him a scroll of hidden lore written in a language he cannot yet read with his eyes, only with his heart. She teaches him that the most important data in this campaign isn't found on the world map, but in the quiet spaces between his own thoughts.

Levels 3 & 4: The Empress and The Emperor - The NPC Guardians
Refreshed by the silence, the Fool steps back into the sunlight and stumbles into a vibrant, fertile valley. Here lives The Empress. She is the gentle, nurturing NPC who heals his hit points, feeds his party, and reminds him that the earth itself is a mother who provides. She teaches him how to rest, create, and appreciate the beauty of the scenery. However, in a true adventure, such luxuries can be fleeting. The path soon leads to a fortified stone city ruled by The Emperor. He is stern, structured, and unyielding. Where the Empress taught the Fool about flow, the Emperor teaches him about boundaries, discipline, and the strict rules of engagement.

"A quest without a strategy is just a tragedy,"

the Emperor warns. He hands the Fool a shield and teaches him how to build structure in his daily life to protect his energy.

Level 5: The Hierophant - The Ancient Lineage
To understand the rules of the kingdom even deeper, the Fool visits the great grand cathedral of The Hierophant. This is the high cleric of the realm, the keeper of the community's traditions and cultural lineages.
The Hierophant shows the Fool the ancient archives: the stories of all the adventurers who walked this exact path before him. He teaches the Fool that he does not have to reinvent the wheel; there is a sacred system and an ancestral blueprint already in place. The Fool learns the power of ritual, community, and honoring the elders who mapped the dungeons long ago.

Level 6: The Lovers - The First Major Choice
Armed with tools, discipline, and tradition, the Fool reaches a literal fork in the road. Standing at the crossroads is The Lovers.
Suddenly, the Dungeon Master pauses the game. This isn't a combat encounter; it’s a moral choice alignment. The Fool cannot take both paths, and he cannot please every companion in his party. He must look inward and decide what he truly values. Who is he when the choices get tough? By choosing a path, he aligns his heart with his true purpose, casting away the need for external validation.

Level 7: The Chariot - Rolling for Initiative
Now, with a clear direction in his heart, the Fool leaps into The Chariot - the ultimate fast-travel mechanic. He hitches two opposing forces - a black steed and a white steed-to his vehicle.
This level is pure willpower. He learns to master his doubts and his desires, steering them both toward his chosen destination. The wheels spin, dust flies, and he drives forward with absolute focus. He has survived the tutorial. He is no longer just wandering; he is charging forward into the unknown.

Take a sip of your tea, my friend. Notice how far our Fool has come. He started with nothing, and now he is charging down the road in a chariot, armed with tools, boundaries, and a chosen purpose.
But the mid-game is approaching. The dungeons are about to get darker, the monsters are about to get bigger, and the dice rolls are about to get a lot more unpredictable.

I have learned to pay attention to that type of repetition. I may fuss first, because I am still me, and I reserve the right to be mildly dramatic before wisdom takes over. Once I calm down, though, I usually see the truth of it. Some patterns show us where we are gifted. People keep coming to us for the same kind of help. The same kind of work keeps pulling at us. The same role keeps finding us, even when we did not apply for it. That kind of pattern can point toward something useful.

Other patterns show us where we need to grow. The same conflict keeps happening. The same disappointment keeps repeating. The same choice keeps leading to the same result. At some point, the issue becomes less about what happened and more about what we keep allowing, choosing, or avoiding.
